FOLLOW THE MAKING OF DARFURNICA

MY 3,5 TIMES 7,76 METERS BIG OIL PAINTING
OF THE GENOCIDE IN DARFUR

http://www.nadiaplesner.com/Website/darfurnica.php

Welcome to the Nadia Plesner Foundation

The great success of my first Simple Living campaign fueled the idea of starting my own Foundation to use my art to raise funds and awareness for crisis situations throughout the world, especially where children are the victims. By artistic campaigns and or events The Nadia Plesner Foundation will try to be the voice for those who do not have one and donate all profits to different humanitarian projects.
My first goal is Darfur, which is in such need of immediate help that we should all do whatever we can to help stop the genocide. The first Simple Living campaign raised - thanks to all of you - more than 30,000 dollars, and the goal for the second Simple Living campaign is to ship medical equipment to the Elfasher Teaching Hospital and the Elfasher Maternity Hospital in Darfur.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful support of my first Simple Living campaign and through the lawsuit. Every comment, email and donation has made a difference.

Please feel free to contact me with ideas, propositions or thoughts that you want to share concerning upcoming projects for The Nadia Plesner Foundation.

LET'S MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Right to free speech and artistic freedom doesn't mean that you are entitled to violate copyright laws.Just like you have the right to your work,in the same way LV has right to its own designs.Everyone needs ways to get rich and famous.Don't play on others sympathy for your personal gains.

Now that you have won your case and you got to be the center of attention again in much the same way as the people that you ridicule in your artwork the big question still remains: Where will you go now? Disneyland maybe? You won a lot of money, so maybe its time that you actually visited some of these countries that you claim to be 'helping'. Go and visit Darfur so you can actually have experience of actually being in an Africa.

Louis Vuitton you disgust me. Your attack on the artist Nadia Plesner shows you as a ruthless and inconsiderate giant. Your name will for ever symbolize the worst of the worst in big companies. It is now clear that you care nothing for freedom of speech, people in grave need or in humanity itself. When ever I see one of your products I will see only indifference and egoism. That is what you are and that is what I will let the carrier know. Louis Vuitton, you disgust me.... even more then McDonald. Sune

Hi Ed, I could not find the poster on eBay, but I did sign my posters sometimes when I was still selling them. If you send me the link by mail I can have a look. All the best, Nadia

Hi Nadia! How are you? I have seen a poster of your design and sold in ebay and signed by you. Are these authentic ones? Please find below the seller: eBay My World: from_under_the_mattress ( 303Feedback score is 100 to 499) of the USA and the listing: NADIA PLESNER "SIMPLE LIVING" HAND SIGNED POSTER Withdrawn due to lawsuit from Louis Vuitton in 2008 over copyright infringment. Poster depicts a Darfur victim with a Louis Vuitton-inspired bag, and a Paris Hilton-style accessory dog. All profits went to Divest for Darfur charity. This was signed for me by special request. Do let me know if they are authentic? I want to purchase so that i can help the cause. Cheers. Ed

Still waiting for an answer about the $5,000 USA dollar bribe you paid. Any chance you can explain why you would do that knowing that the man who took your money could have been killing the people you claim to be helping?
14/4-2011  •  Steve, Canada
I would like to know more about the bribe payment of $5,000 you made to someone in Darfur. Another person from Germany asked that question a few days ago but suddenly his comment is gone.
13/4-2011  •  Jorge, Germany
It is quite a conundrum to see that you are now seeking funds which could have legitimately gone to help poor children in some developing nation or provided much needed medicine to people in need. Stop taking attention away from the real people in need. YOU are not a victim!!! Nadia, where did the bribe money that you paid for the Darfur container go? Could it have in fact gone to purchase weapons that were used in the killing of innocent people in Darfur? Maybe it did. This just goes to show what happens when someone who has no idea how aid works ends up doing more damage than good.
13/4-2011  •  Rebecca, USA
Nadia have you even been to any of the African nations that you raise funds for or the projects that you have claimed to be a part of? I have been informed by several organizations that do to your lack of any understanding of how things work in Africa that you were fooled into paying a bribe of $5,000 dollars to release one of the containers that you shipped from Denmark to Darfur. Is that correct?
13/4-2011  •  John, USA
Nadia, Why would you single out a company like Louis Vuitton? Louis Vuitton actually pays its workers quite well and this is reflectd in their high price. Also all their products are made in France, Spain and even the USA. However you actually wear and support products such as Nike, Addidas, Puma among other items that are made is sweat shops throughout Asia which have been proven to pay poor wages and have horrible working conditions. Your art work is not based on anything but your misunderstanding of how the world works. Louis Vuitton is not the enemy here.

LV never has sales because it actually SHREDS, SHREDS !!!!!!!!!! unsold or slightly damaged stuff somewhere in the southern US. How sick is that?

Hi Alex, US. During my dispute with LV in 2008 they gave an interview to NY Magazine claiming that I was keeping a part of the profits from my Single Living campaign. This is a complete lie. I duscussed this matter myself with LV and offered to have my accountant prove that every penny, apart from the costs, went to Darfur. LV has showed no interest in this offer and clearly try to dismiss the work I do by telling this lie. I believe this court order is a gross violation of my right to free speech and artistic freedom. LV abused the ex parte procedure to have the court ruling with gigantic fines before I was even heard, and of course I went to the media. I am a student with no funds to defend myself and need the public awareness to find help. Regards, Nadia

TL;DR: UP UNTIL THE PUBLICITY, MS. PLESNER WAS IN FACT PROFITING FROM THE SALE OF HER SHIRTS. Hi Ms. Plesner, I find your website and cause disingenuous. Prior to the PUBLICITY you received, you were in fact profiting from your goods. You had only been donating 30% of your profits to the cause. Although, I commend your efforts please do not try to play this off like you are a victim and that you are actually trying to make a difference. LV sent you a cease and desist letter but you did not. Just because I donate a portion of my earnings to charity does not make it okay for me to infringe on copyright laws. Please do not play it off like you were the victim of some greedy corporate power.

I read about your encounter with the "mafia", and it got me all "I want to Illustrate some Louis Vuitton bags too" (oh shit can I write Louis Vuitton? Does it come with a trademark in the end or something?) Ok so picture this as a photo or illustration. Muammar Gaddafi is leaving Libya, head over heels, carrying the infamous bag with him. Kind a like the commercials with Former Russian president Gorbachev, just using a old school western supported dictator. That will get the legal department something profitable to do.
10/3-2011  •  Mimmi, Sweden
You go, miss Plesner! The way Louis Vuitton responded to the T-shirt print and the Darfurnica painting makes me wonder where the limits for greed and cruelty are drawn. I feel ashamed, angered and disgusted about their reaction.
10/3-2011  •  Ilse, The Netherlands
Thank you for bringing this to our attention and shame on LV! Keep up the good work.
10/3-2011  •  Lennart Lindgård, Sweden
The idea of having starving people try to get attention with the help of designer goods is brilliant. Louis Vuitton and the others should pay you for the advertising instead of suing you. They show such a mindblowingly poor judgement! Their own acting have destroyed their brand a whole lot more than your art.

Keep up the good work. Shame Louis Vuitton, Shame,,,,

It saddens and angers me that a corporation can legally prohibit a person to express herself. LV stands for a kind of inhumane greed that is not morally defensible, no matter what social class you live by. Good luck! Do not let them infringe upon your freedom of speech!

Sudan is a wonderful country with many problems to solve. I have enjoyed visiting Sudan many times and its people deserves better. I appreciate your work very much. I am also disgusted with the disproportionate reactions by LV against you. They lose credibility completely. Any charity they have spent money on is nullified in its public relations value. It shows that they care nothing for the cause, only the promotion they may get. I dont feel sorry at all for LV for all the copies of their products that are sold here in Thailand and other places. But soon nobody will even want the low cost copies because the brand will be viewed with disgust. Before, people with real LV products were afraid that people thought they were fake. Now, people with copies will make sure others dont think they are original!
9/3-2011  •  Anna, Netherlands
Im shocked after reading about your conflict with LV. First of all, how can the copyright laws act like this, condemen you without hearing. Secondly why is it a crime to depict s commercial goods that are part of our culture. LV dont sell your stuff if you dont think they are a part of our visual world. Are artist under censorship from the corporate, I thought that belonged in cosnpiracy theories but its seems liek its actually the case. Thirdly, how can you not see that the artwork is humanitarian and not should be applauded and not criminalised. I hope LV will suffer the consequenses, Im sure a large percent of educated consumers will turn their back on them now.
9/3-2011  •  Richard, Sweden
Your story and conflict is today told in one of the largest Swedish newspapers and has got a large response from the readers. Louis Vuitton will regret for what they have done! Apparently they don´t understand how news of this kind will spread and totally destroy their image. The internet has given customers a tool to hold companies accountable! Your picture will be the new symbol for Louis Vuitton in peoples mind! Noone will carry their bags proudly any longer but with bad conscience for indulging in unnecessary luxury when fellow humans starve. So your victory will be total! Thank you for your struggle!

Nadia, thank you for all you've done. It's awful that LV would even consider it's personal gain over those in Darfur who have nothing. I'd love to see more shirts using popular symbols to raise awareness! Keep up your arkwork too- it's inspired me in my high school art classes.

Dear Nadia, I just wanted to let you know that our hearts are with you and I wish you the best of luck in your battle with LV. It's disgusting that they would even consider taking you to court.

Hi Nadia! Too bad we can´t buy the Simple Living T-shirts with the bag anymore! I read about the lawsuit in a magazine. Guess i came to late. Will buy the other one, though. You are doing a really good job, making the rest of the world aware of the problems in Darfur. When the media is turning the blind eye, it´s good to have people like you :-) Hope everything will work out well for you in the future.

Hej Nadia.

Dear Nadia, Great to see that you succeeded in - once again - raising awareness on the ongoing sufferings in Darfur. Thanks a lot for your very important work. Hope that one day soon the islamist government will be forced to stop the slaughtering of men and the Janjaweed ( = arab) rapings of girls and women of Darfur. All the best to you!
10/12-2008  •  Soren Ring, Denmark
Hi Nadia, Sorry to se the bag left the boys arm. Why was that exactly - Did LV/YSL succed in the legal threats against you or what happened? Despite that I would very much want to buy the original t-shirt - do you know where it can be found today? Suggest for the readers on this site: Alternativly one can buy the new t-shirt with the boy without the bag and draw in the bag on the shirt by one selves. If that trend spreads the LV/YSL conglomorate will have lost any ways. And it's an important story to tell about corporate abuse and -arrogance. Best of Luck Søren

Dear Nadia Send you my respect and greetings for your wonderfull work. I am sad that the bag is lost - couldnt it be a "anonymous" kind of fashion bag - i agree with Anastasia (below)- but I am not dissapointed because lawsuits are the most draining thing to have hanging around your neck...dont waiste time with that and use it instead of creating great art as you do. Send you love. Send you love xoxoxo www.myspace.com/inatdk

I have to say that I am a little disappointed that you have updated the image, removing the handbag. It's fair to say that one cannot blame Louis Vuitton for the atrocities that are unfolding in Darfur and other third world nations, but the bag -as a symbol- does work to communicate the gap between the ludicrously wealthy and the starving. It better illustrates society's fascination with celebrities, or the crap that media companies use to distract people, focusing on celebrities like Victoria Beckham and her collection of Hermes Birkin bags, or Paris Hilton and her penchant for rat-like canines and Louis Vuitton. Art is about controversy. I guess, decades ago, society wasn't so litigious as it is now, and artists didn't think about lawsuits (companies didn't think about them either, I guess), but still...I think that the bag should have stayed irrespective of the lawsuit. It still would have focused attention on the issue at hand - Darfur. We're living in a society where people that can make some difference, feel more comfortable about buying five thousand dollar handbags than voicing any concern about the socio-economic gaps that affect developed countries as well. People often resort to crime because of money or poverty, and yet, celebrities constantly complain about security, potential kidnap threats and so on. But the gap is widening. I don't know, I think your updated illustration lacks the edge that it had, but not only that, you say that it was your decision, and I kind of doubt that. When the Sistine Chapel was painted, Michaelangelo didn't cover up some of the nudity he painted, but Daniele da Volterra did.

Hej Nadia. .

hey, love your campaign. love your t-shirt. found out about the simple life t-shirt with the dog and bag at my lecture last friday. was just wondering if the t-shirt is still available with the bag? or if you can buy the new one at your online shop because i can't see it up? was also thinking, if the original t-shirt is not available, could u maybe send the artwork so i can screen print it myself and send a donation for it?!? hope everything goes great for you and keep doing what you're doing ^____^

Just heard about your campaign on Swedish radio, kudos to you! You're not alone in being concerned about the development in Darfur.
16/9-2008  •  Nadia Plesner, Holland
@ Ola: Just for the record, I was not bought by any company. I chose to remove the bag from the drawing to get focus back on Darfur. There was no settlement, no deal. It was my own decision and I am happy with the new campaign I created instead. The main goal for the first campaign was to get media attention on Darfur and when it all escalated into being only about the lawsuit it was time to start something new. I don't know why you would think I made a deal with them, but that is not the case. Best regards, Nadia

Is there anyway to help with your mission besides buying the t-shirts? wich by the way are awesome.

Im sorry to say that the new design doesn't have as much impact as the ladder. Try pissing off corporate companies to ensure max awareness. :D Good luck!

I think its awesome to see what you're doing. I'm looking forward to get a t-shirt of my own, so that I can help support the organizations who helps children. Just one question: When will we be able to buy the t-shirts? The shop should open on august 18th, but it seems that it's not yet. I will try to be patient, take care :-)
