SKATEISTAN

I got very exited when I was asked to decorate a skateboard for a fundraising auction for Skateistan because I think it is a great project.

Skateistan is an Afghan/international NGO with the goal to build skate parks in Afghanistan to create something nice for the children.

Skateistan has received donations for skating equipment, designs of the skate parks, properties etc, but they need money to complete the actual building projects.
This is why the Copenhagen fundraiser organiser, Kristoffer Nilaus Tarp together with Copenhagen Skatepark has arranged an event in March 2009 to raise funds for Skateistan. A part of the event includes an exhibition of donated street art works and decorated skate boards by different artists and musicians and all the art works will be sold on auction afterwards on lauritz.com.

The auction started March 12th. 2009 at the same time as the art exhibition opened in Copenhagen Skatepark. The auction was open for 2 weeks and my skateboard was sold for 940 euros. In total the auction raised an amazing amount of 28530 euros from which all profits are donated to the skatepark in Afghanistan.

Through the conctruction of skate parks in Afghanistan's major cities Skateistan will provide the Afghan youth with a safe environment where kids can be kids and where skateboarding becomes a much needed breathing hole in a country with little to offer for the youth.

Skateistan is Afghanistan's first dedicated skateboarding school. The school will engage with the growing numbers of urbanised youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding and provide new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction and education.

Student capacity will be developed in skateboarding, skateboarding instruction, project management, life skills and English. Our aim is to develop a program that empowers youth to take leadership on issues important to them and build networks that will counter current ethnic barriers.
